Overview

The HW-479 (3_Clr / KY-011 / KY-009 derivative) is a versatile 3-color (RGB) LED breakout module designed for microcontroller and electronic prototyping applications. It integrates a 5mm full-color RGB light-emitting diode with onboard current-limiting resistors (151 / 150 Ω SMD resistors) mounted on a compact black printed circuit board.

By supplying Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signals to the control pins, the module can blend Red, Green, and Blue primary light channels to produce virtually any color spectrum, making it ideal for visual indicators, status lights, and dynamic lighting effects in Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32, and STM32 projects.

Applications and Uses

  • Status & State Indication: Provides multi-state system feedback (e.g., Red for Error, Green for Ready/Normal Operation, Blue for Bluetooth/WiFi Pairing or Processing).
  • Microcontroller Learning & Prototyping: Ideal for STEM education and breadboard experiments teaching digital I/O control, PWM color mixing, and duty cycle adjustments with Arduino, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi.
  • Ambient & Mood Lighting: Can be used in small-scale accent lighting, LED nightlights, decorative DIY lighting fixtures, and custom desktop illumination.
  • User Interface (UI) Feedback: Incorporated into custom control panels, robotics control surfaces, or IoT device dashboards to indicate power states, system modes, or warnings.
  • Optoelectronic Testing & Diagnostics: Utilized by hobbyists and engineers for quick circuit verification and testing RGB color mixing algorithms without manual breadboard wiring.

Pin Configuration & Hardware Connection

  • Pin ‘-‘ (Ground / Common): Connect to the GND pin of the microcontroller (or VCC for Common Anode variants).
  • Pin ‘B’ (Blue LED): Connect to a PWM-capable Digital Pin (e.g., Pin 9 on Arduino) to control blue brightness.
  • Pin ‘G’ (Green LED): Connect to a PWM-capable Digital Pin (e.g., Pin 10 on Arduino) to control green brightness.
  • Pin ‘R’ (Red LED): Connect to a PWM-capable Digital Pin (e.g., Pin 11 on Arduino) to control red brightness.
